Elmiron, the prescribed drug treatment for a rare disease, Interstitial Cystitis, may be causing another newly discovered disease and permanent eye damage or loss of vision. It might be hard to believe but for a woman named Tina, her vision loss and permanent retinal damage are all too real and an Elmiron lawsuit has been filed on her behalf. If you or a loved one has Interstitial Cystitis or painful bladder problems and were prescribed the drug, Elmiron, a recent study has shown a link between Elmiron and a newly discovered degenerative eye disease called Pigmentary Maculopathy.
Here is why you should be concerned about Elmiron and Interstitial Cystitis (IC):
Elmiron, introduced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals in 1996, contains the active ingredient pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS). Elmiron is used to treat bladder pain, Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) and discomfort caused by cystitis of the bladder, Interstitial Cystitis (IC). Elmiron works by attaching itself to the wall of the bladder and providing a buffer between irritating substances and the bladder. Elmiron was also formerly prescribed as a weak blood thinner (anti-coagulant) before more effective blood thinner were developed.
In 2017 the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia began studying a new eye disease called Retinal Maculopathy in patients. A common link emerged as researchers discovered that patients in the study with this eye disease had been taking Elmiron. In Kaiser Oakland’s database, even more patients with retinal maculopathy and eye damage who had taken Elmiron were discovered. In December 2019, the Interstitial Cystitis Network conducted a survey of its members taking Elmiron and over half of the patients on Elmiron who participated in the study suffered from retinal disease.
Here is a list of diagnosed diseases thought to be associated with Elmiron.

In early trials by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, users who took Elmiron for more than four years reported eye problems. Janssen choose not to provide this information on warning labels. Doctors didn’t know of the risks and patients were robbed of the ability to choose if this drug was safe for them. Drug manufacturers are responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of their products before marketing them for public consumption. For decades, Janssen made billions and left clients with permanent vision loss. Some people are too afraid or perhaps too embarrassed to fight for themselves; we hope that you will allow The Burnett Law Firm to fight for you.
