Bleeding Caused by Xarelto

Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood-thinner) that belongs to a class of drugs called factor Xa inhibitors. It is produced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, under licenses from Bayer.

Xarelto is intended to prevent the formation of blood clots without the constant monitoring required with other blood-thinners. Unfortunately, Xarelto does not have any emergency antidote if uncontrollable bleeding occurs while a patient is on the medication. Other anticoagulants can have their effects reversed if a patient begins to bleed.

Serious organ damage or even death could result from uncontrolled bleeding associated with Xarelto. It is particularly dangerous if the bleeding occurs near important organs like the lungs, kidneys or the brain, or if there is uncontrolled internal bleeding.

Possible side effects of Xarelto include:

  • Unexpected bleeding or bleeding that lasts a long time, such as frequent nose bleeds, unusual bleeding from the gums, menstrual bleeding that is heavier than normal or vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding that is severe or uncontrollable
  • Urine that is red, pink or brown
  • Bright red or black stools that look like tar
  • Coughing up blood or blood clots
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Headaches, dizziness or weakness
  • Pain, swelling or new drainage at wound sites

Some patients who took Xarelto and suffered severe complications – and the families of patients who died – have brought claims against the drug’s manufacturer, arguing that they did not receive proper warnings about the drug’s dangerous side effects. You may have a claim for compensation if you or a loved one has suffered negative consequences from taking Xarelto.
